XPRIZE Launches Future Vision Competition to Catalyze the Next Era of Science Fiction

Every breakthrough begins as an idea – a story that holds the power to shape the future. This is why science fiction continues to transform into the breakthroughs of our time.

From the earliest days of science fiction, creators have expanded the boundaries of what humanity believes is possible, shaping culture and inspiring generations of innovators to turn bold visions into reality.

Long before they became reality, Star Trek and other science fiction works imagined handheld communicators, video calls, voice-activated assistants, tricorder-like diagnostic tools, and robots deployed in disaster response — technologies that are now foundational to modern life.

At XPRIZE, that spirit of imagination has long been a catalyst for innovation. Since its founding, XPRIZE has launched dozens of global competitions designed to accelerate breakthroughs that benefit humanity, from private spaceflight and carbon removal to ocean discovery and artificial intelligence.

Now, for the first time, XPRIZE is applying its proven model to storytelling.

Introducing the Future Vision XPRIZE — one of the world’s largest sci-fi film competitions. The $3.5 million global competition invites creators worldwide to produce a sci-fi short film depicting a compelling, hopeful vision of humanity's technology-enabled future.

What Creators Are Asked to Build

Participants are invited to submit a three-minute short film or trailer, along with a treatment (no more than 12 pages in length) that includes a one-page cover sheet with a logline, synopsis, and personal statement. To view the full rules, visit: https://futurevisionxprize.com/rules

Entries should depict compelling, hopeful visions of humanity’s technology-enabled future. The competition is open globally, and creators may use any production tools, including live action, animation, AI, or hybrid approaches.

Submissions are open through August 15, 2026. Finalists will be invited to present their visions live at the Moonshot Gathering in Los Angeles on September 25, 2026, where the grand prize winner will be announced.

What Winning Looks Like

The grand prize winner will receive $2.5 million in production funding, backed by comprehensive production support from Range Media Partners and creative technology from Google to develop their concept into a feature film, along with a $100,000 cash prize. Four additional finalists will each receive $100,000 in cash, with additional prizes to be announced throughout the competition.

As Presenting Sponsor, Salesforce powers the Future Vision XPRIZE on Slack, the central platform where the global creator community will connect, collaborate, and develop their ideas throughout the competition.

The Future Vision XPRIZE is made possible through philanthropic support from leaders across technology, entertainment, and innovation, including Jed McCaleb, Rod Roddenberry, Cathie Wood, and the Abundance360 community.
